Tuesdays with TMAC – Owner Championship/Huset’s Win!
(Bill W) September 8, 2009 – It was a big weekend for the Big Game
Treestands #24 team, and driver, Terry McCarl. Owner Tod Quiring was able
to take his first owner championship at the Knoxville Raceway, and TMAC
capped off the weekend with his 84th career win at Huset’s Speedway near
Brandon, South Dakota. This week, plans are to hit two Wisconsin IRA
shows, one at Superior Speedway on Friday, and the Jerry Richert Memorial
at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday.
The team (aided by four starts during the season by Lynton Jeffrey), came
into Season Championship night at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, with
a 101 point lead over the Larry and Lori Woodward #2w. After qualifying
with the fifth quick time of the night, TMAC made it through the heat
unscathed (third), and lined up fifth in the feature. “My focus going
into the night was winning the point championship for Tod,” says TMAC. “I
was probably a little more complacent in a couple of situations in the
feature than I would normally be. I knew if we stayed out of trouble, and
didn’t get knocked out of the race, we’d be o.k.”
TMAC worked his way up as far as second, but settled for third at the end.
“We were being a little cautious there,” he says. “I’m not trying to say
I didn’t care where I finished or not, but I wasn’t focused on the win
like I usually am. There were a couple of guys in front of us on some
restarts early on that were doing some weird things. Dusty (Zomer) and
Brian (Brown) are great drivers, and they deserved to finish where they
did. They passed us fair and square. We were more set up to run the
bottom again, and the top really came in nice.”
The action at Knoxville has been great all season long. “The fans at
Knoxville have definitely seen some great shows this year, and Saturday
was no different,” says TMAC. “It seems all the races would have been
entertaining for the fans. There was a blanket over the top four all
night on Saturday.”
After finishing third on Saturday, the veteran showed a competitive fire
on Sunday at Huset’s. “I was beating myself up on Sunday a little bit for
where we finished in the race Saturday night, and for being a little
complacent,” he says. “I had a little vengeance going, and I didn’t hold
back at Huset’s. For my own sake, I felt I had something to prove.”
Prove it he did. Quick time was followed by a first place heat run. The
win from seventh in the feature completed a clean sweep on the night as
TMAC registered his 17th win this season. “The guys did a super job with
the car all night, and it was great to have Tod and his family there too,”
he says.
Friday, the team was in action at the Dodge County Fairgrounds, where they
won with the IRA in July. This time things didn’t go as smoothly, with a
DNF ending the night. “The car was working well. We qualified well
(1st), and got through the heat o.k. (4th). The race had trouble getting
started, and we moved up to eighth (tenth) for the start of the feature.
I was feeling Steve Sinclair’s (IRA President) pain with all the spin outs
and crashes. We finally got going, and we got up to fourth in about a
lap. I was trying to pass for third, and got some good moisture on the
right rear. That drove me right into the barrel down there. I was hoping
I was just going to skim it, but alas, that’s not what happened. I told
the guys I wish I could blame them, but it was totally my fault. The guys
got things changed really quickly; it just wasn’t quite in the time
allotted.”
Looking towards the weekend, TMAC is in search of his third career win at
the Jerry Richert Memorial. His previous two wins at the Cedar Lake event
came in 2003 and 2004. In four starts in Superior, he has three seconds
and a fifth.

Don Lookis asks: I have been helping the (Billy and Kim) West's at
Jacksonville, Illinois promote their Back from the Past Shaheen race
(September 25). I was wondering and hoping Terry would be able to make
this show. I see the date is open on his schedule and the next night he is
racing in Wheatland, Missouri on the next night. It would be great to see
Terry at Jacksonville again!
TMAC Answers: Our schedule all year has been week to week, basically. We
watch the weather and things like that. There is a chance that I will be
at Jacksonville. I don’t want to promise it, and then go somewhere else.
Check out our website on Tuesday or Wednesday that week and you’ll be able
to see for sure. It’s definitely on the table, because I want to support
410 races in the Midwest, especially one that pays what that one is
($7,100 to win). We also love Eldora, and Lernerville and Eldora were on
our schedule originally for that weekend. We won’t be sure until the week
is upon us.
